The Role:

Responsibilities:

• Drive starting car in a consistent and safe manner for each live harness race at Dover Downs
• Wash starting car as necessary
• Fuel starting car as necessary
• Store starting car in proper place at conclusion of each racing day
• Take direction from Starter when appropriate
• Use extreme care and horsemanship to provide safety to all horses racing at Dover Downs
• Work in high-traffic area with respect to horses and horsemen
• Provides exceptional customer service
• Works safely, following all established safety rules and regulations
• Communicates effectively with co-workers, supervisors and guests
• Follows all relevant policies and procedures
• Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

• Must possess high school diploma or GED or equivalent work experience
• Current Delaware driver's license required
• Licensed by the Delaware Harness Racing Commission (DHRC)
• Prior experience operating a starting car for harness racing in a racing environment or three years experience as a groom and/or trainer of standard bred race horses .
• Ability to maintain a straight and consistent course with the starting car while the gate is extended
• Ability to drive ahead of the horses with the starting car gate extended for a prolonged period of time should an emergency arise
• Ability to step up into a vehicle
• Must possess good communication skills and assist horsemen regarding shoe repair issues
• Must be able to report to work on time as scheduled
• Must be able to work weekends, holidays and nights as needed
• Must be able to successfully pass a background check
• Must present an overall professional appearance and report to work in appropriate attire
• Must be able to speak, read and write English

Target Hourly Rate: $150/day
